A tasting is always the perfect way to learn to identify and discover more about wines. And if you have the chance to enjoy one onboard a sailboat on the Estuary of Bilbao, the experience is incredible. Ten lucky winners in a prize draw organised at the Premierk Bilbao, Unik and Noak establishments, a few people from the winery and the skipper enjoyed a tasting of the Lágrimas de María range at sea.
The last two Saturdays of July were the dates earmarked for the cruises. We embarked at around 10.30 am at Getxo Marina and motored off to discover the beautiful cliffs of La Galea, passing the beaches of Ereaga and Arrigunaga and making out Puerto Viejo de Algorta (an old fishing port) in the distance. Then we re-entered the Estuary of Bilbao and passed the Puente Colgante (the Hanging Bridge), also known as the Puente de Bizkaia, the first metal transporter bridge of its kind, inaugurated on 28 July 1893 and designed to connect the towns of Portugalete and Getxo. On the cruise, we tasted the Lágrimas de María range. We began with the White to whet our appetites, and followed it with the Rosé and then the Crianza, before finishing with the Reserva 2011. All accompanied by an appetiser while we enjoyed the spectacular views.
Next, we headed towards the Sestao Shipyards and the Bizkaia Steelworks, before turning around and sailing out to sea. At around 2 pm we returned to our point of departure at the Getxo Marina. It was an unforgettable trip through history, tradition and the urban regeneration of Bilbao. Most definitely an experience to repeat.
